A Brief History of the Mac Club
The original Computer club in the Village operated only IBM-type computers. In 1980 the Apple III computer was produced and under the leadership of Sam Mitchell the Computer Club had both devices. In 1994 the computer club divided into two clubs and the Leisure World Macintosh Users Group was formed and became its entity. Originally the computers were located in an annex building at Club House 2. When the Administration building on El Toro opened, the club obtained a dedicated computer room on the third floor. In the beginning, people used computers and very few classes were held. In 1998 the iMac computer was introduced and has been the desktop computer of the Mac club for the past decade.
Since that time Apple has introduced the MacBook, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The Mac Club now conducts classes on all the above products and provides individual help for residents. The Village is fortunate that GRF provides the facility, high speed internet, and desktop Apple computers for use by the community. This facility is the Mac Club’s Learning Center or just the Mac Lab.
Providing these services would not be possible without a group of dedicated volunteers. In addition to Room Supervisors, the Club has volunteers managing the equipment, finances, website, library, membership, communications, teaching, and serving on the Board of Directors. Our annual membership is only $10 and is a way for hundreds of members to support and keep the club going. If you would to like to join the club or become a volunteer, please speak to a staff member to discuss the many opportunities the Mac Club offers.
